Newfoundland: Harness Sizing and Gear Guide

Newfoundlands sit right at the edge of what the pet industry bothers to manufacture. Most brands' largest size is a Newfie's starting point.

Why standard sizing fails on a Newfoundland

A Newfie combines enormous mass, a broad and deep chest, and a dense, water-resistant double coat that adds real bulk to every measurement you take. Three consequences. The neck measurement is wildly deceptive — that coat can hide 5 cm or more. The chest is both wide and deep, so a harness that fits the girth often still sits too high. And sheer weight means any gear that bears load has to be genuinely rated, not just strongly stitched.

Typical adult measurements

Measurement Typical female Typical male
Weight 45–55 kg 60–68 kg
Chest girth 95–110 cm 105–118 cm
Chest depth 40–46 cm 44–50 cm
Neck 58–66 cm 62–72 cm
Back length 68–76 cm 72–82 cm

Start with Size 4 for females, Size 5 for most males. Compress the coat when you measure or you will size up unnecessarily.

Heat is the daily battle

A Newfoundland's coat evolved for cold water. In a warm summer it becomes a liability, and Newfies show heat strain earlier and harder than almost any other breed. Cooling gear is not a nice-to-have here, and it is exactly the category where sizing runs out soonest — independent reviewers openly note that cooling vests for the largest breeds remain a problem, with test panels rarely going beyond medium dogs. Look for full ribcage coverage and check the published chest range before anything else.

Coat and drool, honestly

Two Newfie realities nobody puts on the brochure. The undercoat sheds in quantities that defeat ordinary tools — a proper undercoat rake matters more than a nice brush. And Newfies drool, seriously and continuously. Washable drool cloths are not a novelty item in this house; they're consumables.

Weight-bearing gear needs a number on it

Helping a 65 kg dog up a step is a real load. Any support harness you buy should publish a tested load rating. If a seller can't tell you what theirs is rated to, that's your answer.
